If you own a collection of retro games from yesteryear, chances are you remember how they looked on an old 4:3 TV screen.  Monitors back then featured a much lower resolution than today's high-definition TVs, but had a distinctive look that most fondly remember - scanlines.

Arcade gaming has come a long way since many dropped quarters into stand-up and sit-down cabinets, admiring the graphics on a glowing CRT screen.  Today, many can enjoy their games of yesteryear via MAME or other arcade emulation, but the experience on modern LCD screens isn't the same.  For those who remember CRT displays, scanlines were distinct and quite visible, and in many cases characterized how the graphics were to appear.  A scanline is one line, or row, in a raster scanning pattern, such as a line of video on a cathode ray tube (CRT) display of a television set or computer monitor. 1

SCAN.DL - or "Scan Delineation Line" - is an adjustable, VGA input/output adapter that generates scanlines, replicating the appearance of older CRT monitors on modern, hi-resolution LCD/LED displays.

    Robust Features, Economical Price

At just $19.95, SCAN.DL comes with 3 individual trimpots for red, blue and green colors.  Rotating the trimpots clockwise or counter-clockwise using a small flathead screwdriver, you can change the intensity of the scanlines to your preferences, from dark to faintly visible.

If you notice that the screen turns increasingly red, green or blue, this is normal.  All that is needed is a turn of each pot to match each of the color intensities that you set for a single color.  For example, if you increase the red, make sure to increase the green and blue by the same amount.  This will return the screen color to normal, and in turn adjust to your desired scanline intensity.

Also present are 4 prominent dipswitches to turn on the device and configure the scanlines.  These are labeled on the device:

    • [P] Power on/off
    • [W] Scanline width (for thicker or thinner scanlines, adjusted thicker for higher resolutions)
    • [OE] Even or odd scanlines
    • [S] Vertical sync.  Vertical sync inverts the VSYNC signal; VGA resolutions other than 640x480 @ 60Hz or 1024x768 @ 60Hz will need this activated to properly display scanlines.

To activate each, move the switch towards the number or label on the device.  To turn off, simply move the switch away from the number or label.

Other features include two female VGA connectors on each side, representing signal input and output.

    The compact (2.1in x 1.5in x .5in) hardware is enclosed in a protective, anti-static bag.

    High-Resolution and Dreamcast VGA Compatible

SCAN.DL is a 31KHz VGA product, and will support resolutions to 1080p (1920x1080) and above. It has been tested on various VGA sources and monitors for compliance.  The quality largely depends on the graphics card (if using PC), quality of cable, resolution your monitor can produce.  Best practice is to test a VGA source and the cables you intend to connect the SCAN.DL to.

The SCAN.DL has been tested on VGA output from the Sega Dreamcast and will output to a TV with VGA (often labeled as PC) input.  You can also connect it to a VGA to HDMI upscaler if your TV does not have a VGA input.

    1. Works great

I used this on a VGA CRT monitor, 640x480 signal for a 340x240 game, and the scan lines were perfect. on Jun 17th 2020

    2. Works as advertised.

This worked exactly as expected. Very easy to use. Just read the documentation first. Really improved the look. on Oct 21st 2019

    3. great product that helped me do exactly what i wanted

Just fantastic. Couldn't be happier. I didn't realize what i was missing trying to play retro games on LCD without scan-lines. Now everything just looks so much better / natural. on Jul 9th 2019

    4. Easy Setup - Works Great!

Scan.dl brings that CRT feel to a modern monitor. Works great in a jamma RGB to vga converter (1024x768) setup with a male to male connector to avoid an extra cable. A couple minutes of experimenting with the dip switches and your are all set. Would buy again for future setups. on Aug 22nd 2018

    5. Works perfect. Amazing value

Decent price, and does exactly as advertised. My only gripe is that I wish it had one male, one female end, as I had to use two vga cables for my setup.

Super easy to setup, pretty much plug and play. Would definitely recommend for any setup not capable of running hlsl within mame. Will definitely buy more.

    6. Exactly as advertised

Arrived in perfect condition, installed in about 2 minutes, configured for 5, and I was done.

I'm using it in my stand-up arcade machine with an LCD screen, and the scanlines add HUGE amounts of nostalgia.

Very impressed. Definitely improved the quality of my arcade experience. Love it!

    7. The Best Investment for My Emulation System

I am in the midst of building a bartop arcade cabinet, with an upright cabinet to follow. When I researched scanline generators, I liked the configurability of this one, and decided to try it. After setting a fixed resolution on my Raspberry Pi and piping to the board through an HDMI to VGA converter, I was blown away by the realism. When my monitor is behind a light bronze plexiglass sheet, I can only imagine how much more it will get that tube vibe from my LCD.

I will be putting these in every cabinet that I build. As far as accessories go, this is simply some of the best "bang for the buck" that I can see spending.

    8. Good but the description is off.

**Update by FA** The product description was updated to read "S" as vertical sync on the device instead of "V".

We have standup mame machine at my work, but its was in bad shape. They tapped me when I stated the job to work on it and make it better. I rebuilt the computer from scratch with hyperspin, removed the X-Arcade buttons and replaced the IL, and then looked at the display itself. It looked meh. So I got one of these generators.

It looks great! It really is a huge change looking at games with scanlines than without. Its one of those things that always bugged me about emulation: with no scanlines the picture is not right.

I knocked this unit down one star though. There is no 'V' on mine for vertical sync. There is an 'S' which I assume does the same thing. I generally don't like to guess though, and I certainly am not running vertical sync, but I am a bit put-off by the 'S' instead of 'V'.

    9. Scanlines for low Resolution 2D games

      **Update by FA**

Please make sure to switch to thick scanlines in order to see scanlines on higher resolutions. It appears that reviewer did not perform this when trying to view on 720p. We mention this in the product description: [W] Scanline width (for thicker or thinner scanlines, adjusted thicker for higher resolutions).

Make sure to have your resolution settings to 480p when you want to play games with Clear scanlines. High Resolutions like 720p+ will make the scanlines so thin you can barely see them.

This SL Generator works Great! Exactly what I need it for when playing playstation 2 or 2D Fighters, SHMUPS & Beat em' ups on PS3 or X-box 360.
